Important names of beverages and drinks in Korean

Summer is here! 🌞 With the sun shining fiercely, it is more important than ever to stay hydrated! 💦 For your thirst for knowledge, here’s a new list covering refreshments in Korean language! 🤓 After all, we got food (vocabulary). 🍽 Now we need (to learn about) drinks! 🥛🧃🥤☕️🍵🥃🍸 [Btw, the lists you can find on this homepage cover Korean food vocabulary ranging from animal– to plant-based ingredients, even spices and food additives. If you haven’t learned the Korean alphabet yet, here is an introductory guide!]

Would you PLEASE notice how many different kinds of tea Korea has to offer? 🍵 Innumerable teas are created by steeping, boiling or simply mixing various ingredients with water. 🍊🍂🌼🌾 In fact, many teas are colloquially referred to as “water” (물 mul) in Korean! Those unsweetened teas are basically flavored water and help to quench the thirst just as well. And such teas are ever diversifying! For instance, you can cook dried radish or tangerine peels in water and call the result “tea”! Other kinds of tea, on the other hand, are more like dessert because they are very sweet and consist of fruit syrups or jam mixed with water!

Apart from that, coffee culture is quite big in South Korea! ☕️ There are countless caffeinated drinks! Accordingly, an entire section here is dedicated to words related to coffee! [Btw, coffee fairs are much larger than tea fairs!! And the cafe business is booming!]

Below vocabulary list provides the names of drinks in Korean language. 🗒🍵🇰🇷🇰🇵 What do you normally drink on a daily basis? Water? Juice? Tea? ❓ Also, is your favorite beverage mentioned in the list here? ❗️ If something needs to be included in this list, feel free to comment below or send me a message!

In this compilation of refreshments, words are sorted in categories featuring common soft drinks, other beverages typical for Korea, as well as teas, so-called Korean tea, coffee drinks and lastly alcohol. Additional vocabulary related to drinks is listed at the bottom.

Drinks are generally referred to as eumnyo 음료 or eumnyosu 음료수 in Korean. Even Bingsu (빙수), Korea’s famous shaved ice dessert, is considered to be a beverage! 🍧 Another curiosity about drinks in Korea is that most teas, coffee beverages and other drinks can be enjoyed hot as well as refreshingly cold! Order according to personal preference and season by adding either “a-iseu” (아이스) for ice cubes 🍵🧊 or “ttatteut-han” (따뜻한) for a hot drink 🍵♨️ to the name of your desired refreshment! Alcoholic beverages are collectively referred to as sul, but most names of liquors end on the syllable “ju” 주 which originates from the Sino-Korean character 酒 for “alcohol”. 🍶

Are you thirsty yet? Let’s dive in! 🍹💦
